How Many Ads Should You Test, and What Should It Cost?

By Atharv Sankpal

Creative testing goes wrong in two directions: testing three ads a month and wondering why nothing improves, or launching forty at once and never giving any of them enough data. Here is a testing framework that fits a real budget, with numbers you can apply this week.

How many ads to test per month

Monthly ad spendNew ads per monthTest budget per variation
$3,0006 - 8$20 - $30 / day for 3 days
$10,00012 - 16$30 - $50 / day for 3 - 4 days
$30,00020 - 30$50 - $100 / day for 3 - 5 days
$100,00040+Dedicated testing campaign at 15 - 20% of spend

The loop

  1. Pick one variable per round: hook, angle, format or offer. Never two.
  2. Produce three to five variations of that variable on the same body.
  3. Launch into one broad ad set so the algorithm has enough conversion data.
  4. Wait for at least 3 days or 50 outbound clicks per creative before judging.
  5. Kill under 25 percent hook rate. Promote anything beating control CPA.
  6. Take the winner and make five more variations of it. Repeat.

Reading results without fooling yourself

  • Hook rate tells you about the first three seconds, nothing else.
  • Hold rate tells you if the middle is boring.
  • CTR tells you if the offer landed.
  • CPA is the only number that decides scaling, and it needs volume to be real.
  • One purchase is not a signal. Neither is zero purchases at $20 spent.

The 70 / 20 / 10 split

Put 70 percent of budget behind proven winners, 20 percent behind iterations of those winners, and 10 percent behind genuinely new angles. The 10 percent is what keeps you alive when the winner dies, and it always dies. That is covered in creative fatigue on Facebook ads.

Why volume is a production problem

Every testing framework collapses at the same point: you cannot make enough ads. Filming creators takes weeks, so brands test the same four videos for a quarter. AI-produced creative removes the bottleneck, which is the entire reason I built my process around AI video ads instead of shoots.
